Explain how Canada's identity has been shaped as a result of its involvement in international affairs from 1914-2000
A nation's identity is not only based on the recognition of its citizens, but mostly builds on the recognition of other countries. Canada has been devoting to numerous international affairs to gain international recognition. By supporting the warfare and establishing peacekeeping forces, Canada is widely recognized as an independent and distinct country.
For example, Canada's involvement in the First and Second World Wars builded a reputation for the nation itself. During the "Hundred Days" in the First World War, Canada was such a brave and strong force that German troops hated to face the most. Also, during the Second World War, Canada contributed greatly to the Allies' victory. By sending convoys and troops, Canada kept the United Kingdom from surrendering. By landing on the Juno beach on D-Day and liberating people in Netherlands, Canadian troops shown themselves as a crucial force to acquire victory. These examples shapes Canada's identity as an active and helpful company.
Furthermore, after the Second World War, the role of peacekeeping that Canada played shapes Canada's identity as a friendly middle power. For instance, during the Suez Crisis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada established a peacekeeping force which stopped the war and catastrophic conflicts between the Western Power and the Soviet Union. Likewise, Canada played an important rule in the founding of the United Nations, which has significantly contributed to the world’s development.
In addition, Canada’s identity has been shaped through the involvement of foreign aid and peacemaking missions. During the civil war of Rwanda, Canadian general and his troops tried to stop the genocide and worked hard on ceasefire. Similarly, during the enthic cleansing in Yugoslavia, Canadian troops tried to save more lives. As a result, Canada’s identity ha been obviously shaped as a nation which is capable to save other countries from suffering.
